The Initiative For Women's Labor and Employment (KEIG) - TURKEY
The Women's Labour and Employment Initiative Platform (KEIG) in Turkey is a newly established platform of NGOs, academics, local authorities, labor unions and semi-public institutions to promote a gender perspective in labour and employment issues.
The Platform was founded in February 2007, following a conference on Women's Labor and Employment held by a group of academicians and NGOs in Istanbul that brought together representatives from women's organizations and initiatives, labor unions, employer organizations, universities, public institutions and local governments. After the conference, KEIG turned into a platform consisting of those participants that agreed to be part of it.
The main aim of the platform is to make women's domestic and public labor visible and recognized, to disseminate research and information on issues of women's labor and employment and to combat discrimination against women by proposing policies towards equal opportunities for employment, decent working conditions and decent income in Turkey.
Since its foundation, the platform has made a number of concrete steps towards the practical implementation of its goals, including Turkey's Women Organizations' joint press statement critically assessing the current state of women's employment in Turkey; organizing a conference on women's labor and employment, producing and distributing a report entitled "What type of social security the Draft Bill of Social Security and General Health Insurance promises to women?", and establishing connections with the International Labour Organisation (ILO), the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, the Directorate of the Status of Women (KSGM), as well as labor organizations and trade unions.
